Honors in Special Education

We invite students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and high interest in the education of exceptional children to participate in the Special Education Honors Program. This program is designed to challenge qualified students and to broaden their educational experience. Upon successful completion of this program students will have Departmental Honors Scholar designated on their diploma and final transcript.

Requirements for admission

  • Be admitted as a special education major in one of the sequences offered.
  • Be admitted as a member of the University Honors Program.
  • Declare intent to seek Department Honors with advisor.

Continuation and graduation requirements:

Students must:

  • Be a member of the University Honors Program
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 and a minimum GPA of 3.6 in coursework required of special education majors, within the student's sequence
  • Complete nine semester hours of honors, or in-course honors, within the Department of Special Education with no grade below B
  • Complete three semester hours of Independent Honors Study in Special Education (SED 299)
  • Complete four semesters of coursework at Illinois State University
  • File for graduate with honors through the University Honors Office during the first month of the semester you are graduating

Special Education Honors Students:

  • Will be given priority in pre-registering through the University Honors Office.
  • Will receive more individualized guidance in study and research interests in Special Education.
  • Will have the Departmental Honors Scholar designation on their diploma and official transcript.

Special Education faculty work closely with students choosing to pursue honors work, research, or early involvement in professional organizations. Department advisors guide students in designing individual plans of study.
