Education

  • Ph.D., University of Virginia

Biography

Upon graduation from the University of Incarnate Word in 1979, I worked as a teacher of students with emotional and behavioral disorders at Lackland Special Education Cooperative, in San Antonio, Texas. Following that, I worked at the San Antonio Children’s Center, a residential treatment facility associated with the San Antonio Medical Center. During these years, I learned so much about the students I worked with and about the experience of a professional educator of students with special needs. The memories of these years remain with me as some of the most special in my career thus far. In 1986, I decided to pursue a Ph.D. at the University of Virginia and while there I worked side by side with some of the finest professionals in the field. Upon completion of my studies in 1989, I came to Illinois State University as a faculty member. For more details about my background and experience, please see the Illinois State University Report, November 2002. I have served Illinois Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders in several capacities including Past-President, Treasurer, Membership Chair, and I have served as Treasurer of the Council for Exceptional Children – Division for Research. My research interests include: The integration of students with disabilities in general education classrooms. The representation of individuals with disabilities in the mass media. The use of qualitative research methods. Curriculum for students with emotional/behavioral disorders. Teaching Philosophy Engagement in learning is one of the most important endeavors of human beings. The opportunity to learn must be made available to every human being. The provisions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act are among the finest accomplishments of the education system in the United States. The efforts of all students to learn, understand and grow must be cherished and nurtured. In my professional endeavors as an educator, the students hold center stage. What I can do to promote their learning and growing is my utmost and singular concern.
