Biography

Dr. Stoner has an academic background that integrates three disciplines. She earned her bachelor degree in psychology from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, her masters degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Bradley University, and her doctorate degree in special education from Illinois State University. She is a certified speech and language pathologist. Dr. Stoner has worked in a variety of settings. Prior to completing her doctorate, she was a speech and language pathologist in the public schools, working primarily with children with orthopedic impairments and specializing in augmentative communication. She has taught courses at Illinois State University and Bradley University. Her research interests include families of children with disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, teaching efficacy, spelling instruction, and communication strategies.

Teaching Philosophy: To be an effective teacher one must have a strong knowledge base and know how to apply that knowledge in the field. Dr. Stoner hopes that she conveys this to her students through meaningful assignments and interactive classes. Teaching children with disabilities incorporates knowledge, flexibility, adaptability, and self-assessment. It is an extremely rewarding profession.

Her teaching assignments at ISU have included: SED 454 Consultation and Collaboration in Special Education, SED 377 - Communication Strategies for Individuals with Disabilities, SED 373 - Family-Professional Collaboration, SED 201 - Effective Collaboration and teaching Exceptional and Diverse Learners I, and SED 383 - Developing and Implementing Alternative Curriculum.
